Devotion Meets Deity: The Interface of Heaven and Earth's Delight

Introduction

This poem is a deeply evocative, multi-layered meditation that merges intensely intimate devotion with a sharp theological and socio-political analysis of first-century Judea. Structured around a raw, recurring refrain—an offering of vulnerability laid bare at "the interface of heaven and earth's delight"—the piece journeys through the Gospel of Luke to contrast two wealthy figures: the rich young ruler who faltered under the weight of his possessions, and Zaccheus, the compromised outcast who surrendered his earthly treasures for an unexpected taste of grace.

Through its vivid historical lens, the narrative critiques the fractured factions of ancient Israel—the compromising Sadducees, the performance-driven Pharisees, and the radical Zealots—illustrating why a desperate tax collector would choose the Roman system over institutional religious hypocrisy. Ultimately, the poem transcends historical critique to offer a profound spiritual truth: that unconditional, vulnerable human devotion possesses a quiet magnitude capable of moving the very heart of the divine.

## The Poem

Look into my eyes

And read me into your life

My eyes are deep, dark, and brown

Dive deep and pull me in to that bosom

Where I may continue to abide

Fearless, Worriless,

Unmindful of every snare and pain the world might hide

My eyes hold stories

Of pain, joy, and love

Merciful and Kind

They empathise with the weak and vulnerable

Your love is worth a fight

If I needed to win you over every single day

I would do it still

With all my life

Ready to drink

Whatever you may give

A cup a suffering or of delight

I lay my life down

Into your laptop

Lying down at the interface of heaven and earth's delight.

You came down

Heaven's delight

To meet Zaccheus

Along the way

In his house

He didn't invite

You invited yourself

To be his guest

For the night

The lost Zaccheus

Was lost for words

He didn't know whether to thank or hide

To clear his stance

He gave away all his earthly delights

Promised the poor

Half of his possession

And, chose to follow Jesus in his style

The rich young ruler

Did give it a try

A chapter ago in Luke's biography

But he felt Jesus demanded too much

Perhaps, than he ought to give

The ruler well-versed in Torah's promises

For a moment lost sight

The glitter of gold and earthly silver

Deceived his mind.

Look into my eyes

And read me into your life

My eyes are deep, dark, and brown

Dive deep and pull me in to that bosom

Where I may continue to abide

Fearless, Worriless,

Unmindful of every snare and pain the world might hide

My eyes hold stories

Of pain, joy, and love

Merciful and Kind

They empathise with the weak and vulnerable

Your love is worth a fight

If I needed to win you over every single day

I would do it still

With all my life

Ready to drink

Whatever you may give

A cup a suffering or of delight

I lay my life down

Into your laptop

Lying down at the interface of heaven and earth's delight.

Jesus told his followers

God can create followers of the kind

Who would leave behind

Everything to follow him

For what's impossible for men is not so difficult for God

Zaccheus, the unlikely hero

Caught Jesus' sight

As he passed through Jericho

After giving a beggar his sight

Did Zaccheus see it?

We don't quite know

But he knew very well

That he was far away

From Heaven's Delight

Outcasted by rich Synogogue rulers

Hypocrites,

Who loved wealth

But hid themselves behind a facade of prayer and reciting

Zaccheus knew he had

No chance to make it

In his life

Unless he joined the Roman delight

And made the hypocrites pay

For they had sinned

Against the needy of Heaven's Delight.

Look into my eyes

And read me into your life

My eyes are deep, dark, and brown

Dive deep and pull me in to that bosom

Where I may continue to abide

Fearless, Worriless,

Unmindful of every snare and pain the world might hide

My eyes hold stories

Of pain, joy, and love

Merciful and Kind

They empathise with the weak and vulnerable

Your love is worth a fight

If I needed to win you over every single day

I would do it still

With all my life

Ready to drink

Whatever you may give

A cup a suffering or of delight

I lay my life down

Into your laptop

Lying down at the interface of heaven and earth's delight.

Zaccheus loved wealth

More than his heavenly citizenship

That hinged on

A name with his fathers

On a Scribe's scroll

He denied both

Citizenship and Heavenly reward

For he saw what such people did to the

Deformed, destitute

Beggar, orphan, and widow alike

Karl Marx didn't live then

To find Zaccheus

But the zealots did not

Convince him

For why should he fight for a Kingdom that had lost its sight?

Many claimants had come

As Messianic saviors

Of his land's pride

But Zaccheus could see

The divided Israel's plight

The Temple priests (Sadducees) eager to keep their hold

Ready to compromise

The Pharisees set apart seeking moral correction as the Messiah's prime need

The Zealots everready to establish a Kingdom through rebellion and anarchy

Can they do it?

Unlikely, said the desperate Zaccheus

In his plight.

Look into my eyes

And read me into your life

My eyes are deep, dark, and brown

Dive deep and pull me in to that bosom

Where I may continue to abide

Fearless, Worriless,

Unmindful of every snare and pain the world might hide

My eyes hold stories

Of pain, joy, and love

Merciful and Kind

They empathise with the weak and vulnerable

Your love is worth a fight

If I needed to win you over every single day

I would do it still

With all my life

Ready to drink

Whatever you may give

A cup a suffering or of delight

I lay my life down

Into your laptop

Lying down at the interface of heaven and earth's delight.

Can Israel save itself from the Romans?

Or will Romans be God's saving army?

Caught between the ideas he chose a better life.

Why fight for hypocrites or a divided pride?

They are lions of Judah's tribe

But their hearts led astray by worldly delights

The only thing they sought was making merry with an outward show of morality

Jesus came

Zaccheus watched

From the top of a syncamore tree

The tree was short

And so was he both

In height and in justice with his Lord

He welcomed Jesus

Immediately into his house

Knowing well that Jesus risked it all

To enter into a tax collector's house

The Pharisees thought Jesus took the bait

Now, it's a matter of days

To nail his Messianic claim

But Jesus

Knowing their hearts

Announced Zaccheus was lost but is now found

A happy day it was

For the poor and the weak

But the rich went away

Gnashing their teeth.

And, so will it be

At the end of this journey

When true love will lay to rest all arguments and lower every rising eyebrow

For even the deity

Is not above the deep devotion of his delight.

For devotion always conquers the deity, his heart and his mind.

Look into my eyes

And read me into your life

My eyes are deep, dark, and brown

Dive deep and pull me in to that bosom

Where I may continue to abide

Fearless, Worriless,

Unmindful of every snare and pain the world might hide

My eyes hold stories

Of pain, joy, and love

Merciful and Kind

They empathise with the weak and vulnerable

Your love is worth a fight

If I needed to win you over every single day

I would do it still

With all my life

Ready to drink

Whatever you may give

A cup a suffering or of delight

I lay my life down

Into your laptop

Lying down at the interface of heaven and earth's delight.
