The Dead Company: The Whitewashed Tombs

It hurts when you know

The people whom you trusted above all
Were faking it all along.
It hurts when you know
What affects you means nothing to them at all.
It hurts when your whole
Future hangs on promises made
By people who betray you.
Naive and honest, you believed.
Credulous, you accepted all that was said.
Without calculation, your heart was sleeved,
While they wove a trap of deception instead.
Then, at the peak of their hidden game,
The blow was struck, you were caught off guard.
The dear and beloved brought the shame,
And left your trusting spirit scarred.
It hurts when you know
The people whom you trusted above all
Were faking it all along.
It hurts when you know
What affects you means nothing to them at all.
It hurts when your whole
Future hangs on promises made
By people who betray you.
They say God won't forsake your side,
That His Spirit dwells where the faithful stand.
But when the rubber hits the road to ride,
And true faces show across the land,
You wonder why you chose this path,
Despite the odds, for the Kingdom’s sake.
Your earthly life is ruined in their wrath,
Your heavenly comfort left to ache.
A ruined name is all you gain,
For years of love and generosity—
Cast off as nothing in your pain,
Exiled by their community.
It hurts when you know
The people whom you trusted above all
Were faking it all along.
It hurts when you know
What affects you means nothing to them at all.
It hurts when your whole
Future hangs on promises made
By people who betray you.
Sad, you simply walk away.
You cannot hate them, though you tried.
"What’s the use?" your broken whispers say,
Nothing changes on the other side.
For whitewashed tombs holding dead men's bones
Will never acknowledge the grief you bear.
They cannot hear your silent moans,
They do not notice, they do not care.
Tears, fears, and lost, empty years—
An investment poured in a dying firm.
No matter how long the holder perseveres,
The market crashes on their terms.
It hurts when you know
The people whom you trusted above all
Were faking it all along.
It hurts when you know
What affects you means nothing to them at all.
It hurts when your whole
Future hangs on promises made
By people who betray you.
You read the sayings of the wise,
But they belong to a different age.
Today, betrayal and lust arise,
And rewrite every ancient page.
You look like a relic from decades past,
Misjudged by eyes that cannot see.
Quit or not quit, the die is cast,
Nepos and systems will always be.
The bullies will hate, humiliate, and hound,
Whether you choose to stand or run.
But their hollow walls will hear no sound,
As you walk out beneath the sun.
It hurts when you know
The people whom you trusted above all
Were faking it all along.
It hurts when you know
What affects you means nothing to them at all.
It hurts when your whole
Future hangs on promises made
By people who betray you.
